Manton is a small place in the middle of Kentucky, in the United States. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that don't have their own local government like a city or town. Manton is located on the western edge of Washington County. It's close to where three counties meet: Washington, Marion, and Nelson.

Manton used to be known by a different name, Blincoe. This name appeared on maps and in books like the 1896 Kentucky Gazetteer. It was still called Blincoe on official maps as late as 1949. The name "Manton" might have come from a family named Mandt. They were known for supporting churches and schools in the area. However, the name "Manton" was used before this family was well-known, so the exact reason for the name change is a bit of a mystery!

One of the oldest buildings in Manton is Holy Rosary Church. It was founded before 1844. The main part of the church building was started on November 2, 1844. This church is a brick building located near Hardin's Creek and the Beech Fork River. A book from 1932 mentions that the church might stand where an old trading post once was.

For over 80 years, a store called Newton's Grocery has been a part of Manton. It used to be a general store, selling all kinds of things people needed. Today, it's more like a convenience store, where you can quickly grab snacks and other items.

Where is Manton Located?

Manton is found at specific map coordinates: 37.714722 degrees North and 85.35827 degrees West. The land here is about 530 feet above sea level. The community is located along Route 605, close to where the Cisselville road crosses it. It's also just a few miles north of Loretto.

A Look at Manton's Past

Manton has an interesting history, especially because of its location near the Beech Fork River.

River Trade and Travel

Long ago, there was a special place on the Beech Fork River called a station house. Farmers would bring their cattle and goods here to store them. In the spring, the river would flood, making it wide enough for flatboats. These boats could travel down the Beech Fork to the Salt River, then to the Ohio River, and all the way to New Orleans. This was an important way for farmers to sell their products.

Manton During the Civil War

During the American Civil War, some soldiers from Manton joined the Union Army. These men were part of the Tenth Kentucky Infantry. Most of the soldiers from the Manton area were in a group called Company G.

A famous Confederate cavalry leader named John Hunt Morgan also passed through this area. He was known for his daring raids into Kentucky during the war. Manton is mentioned in some historical accounts related to his movements.
