Early Life and Education
Manuel was born in Santiago. His parents were Manuel Recabarren Aguirre and Martina Rencoret Cienfuegos. He studied at the Instituto Nacional. This was a very important school in Chile. He became a lawyer from the Universidad de Chile in 1865.
In 1842, he started teaching Political Economy at the Instituto Nacional. This subject is about how countries manage their money and resources. In 1859, he married Carolina del Solar Marín. They did not have any children.
Starting a Political Career
Manuel Recabarren joined the Liberal Party. This party believed in more freedom and less government control. He took part in the Revolution of 1851. This was a big conflict in Chile. During this time, he was captured. He was then sent away from Chile.
He came back to Chile in 1862. After returning, he worked for a newspaper called La Voz de Chile. This means Voice of Chile. On June 28, 1864, he was chosen as a deputy for Illapel. A deputy is like a representative in the government.
Important Government Roles
In 1866, Manuel Recabarren became the secretary of the Fleet. This was during the Chincha Islands War. This war involved Chile and other countries. Later, President Aníbal Pinto chose him for a very important job. He became the Minister of the Interior. This role is in charge of many things inside the country.
As Minister, he worked to bring peace to the Arauco border. This area had conflicts with the Mapuche people. He personally went there to help. He also built several forts. These forts helped protect the border in Malleco.
Later Years and Legacy
Manuel Recabarren continued his political work. In 1879, he was elected as a Senator for Talca. A Senator is another type of government representative. He was later elected Senator for Arauco in 1882. He also served as Senator for Concepción in 1888.
He was re-elected as Senator for Arauco in 1891, 1894, and 1897. He served his country for many years. Manuel Recabarren passed away in Santiago in 1901. He was 75 years old.
