Manuel Sanchís Hontiyuelo (born on May 23, 1965) is a Spanish former professional footballer. He played as a sweeper, which is a defender who "sweeps up" any loose balls or attacks that get past the main defensive line.

Sanchís was a key part of a famous group of five players from the Real Madrid youth academy. This group was known as La Quinta del Buitre (The Vulture's Cohort). Manuel Sanchís was special because he was the only one of these five players who spent his entire football career with Real Madrid. His father, Manuel Sanchís, also played for Real Madrid and was a Spanish international player, just like his son.

Manuel Sanchís played over 700 official matches for Real Madrid. He also represented the Spanish national team in one World Cup and one European Championship.

Playing for Real Madrid

Manuel Sanchís started his football journey in the famous youth system of Real Madrid. He was born in Madrid, Spain. His first game with the main team was on December 4, 1983. He even scored a goal in that game against Real Murcia. In his first season, he played 18 matches and scored 3 goals for the senior squad.

For most of the next 15 seasons, Sanchís played in almost every match. He was a very important player in Real Madrid's many victories. These wins included six La Liga championships (the top Spanish football league), two UEFA Champions League titles (Europe's biggest club competition), and two UEFA Cups.

In the 1999–2000 season, he didn't play as much, but he still helped Real Madrid win their eighth European Cup. He played a short part in the final match against another Spanish team, Valencia CF, which Real Madrid won 3–0.

Sanchís retired from football in 2001 when he was 36 years old. He had played an amazing 710 official games for Real Madrid, his only club. Out of these, 523 were in the league. He was also the team's captain for 13 years, showing his leadership and importance to the club.

Playing for Spain

Manuel Sanchís first showed his talent with the Spanish under-21 team. He helped them win the UEFA European Under-21 Championship in 1986.

He made his debut for the senior national team on November 12, 1986. This was a qualifying match for the UEFA Euro 1988 against Romania, which Spain won 1–0. Sanchís went on to play 48 matches for Spain. He played in both the Euro 1988 tournament and the 1990 FIFA World Cup.

His last game for the national team was a friendly match against the United States on March 11, 1992.

How He Played

Manuel Sanchís was a central defender, often playing as a sweeper. He was known for being calm and steady in defense. He had excellent positioning and was very agile. He was also known for his fair play, even though he was an aggressive player when needed. His smart tactical thinking and ability to be in the right place at the right time made him a standout player for Real Madrid.
