History of Maple Plain
Maple Plain gets its name from the many sugar maple trees that grew in its forests. People started settling in this area around 1854. Early life in the settlement was centered around Lake Independence, which is to the north, and Pioneer Creek, which flows out of the lake.
A railroad, called the St. Paul, Pacific and Manitoba Railroad, was built through Maple Plain in 1868 and 1869. This helped the town grow. By 1871, Maple Plain had its own post office. The community officially became a village in 1912. Over the years, the village added important services: water pipes were installed in 1939, a sewer system around 1950, and paved roads in 1961.
