Maplewood is a small, mostly rural place in Amelia County, Virginia. It's an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Maplewood is located where two roads, SR 640 and SR 697, meet. It's also very close to the main US 360 highway.

Maplewood is split between two ZIP code areas: 23002, which covers Amelia Court House (the county's main town), and 23083, which covers Jetersville. The closest volunteer fire station is in Jetersville, about two miles away.

Around the year 1900, Maplewood was a small village with a post office. It was also a stop for freight trains on the Southern Railway. This railway line is still used by freight trains today. It runs next to Maplewood Road and is now owned by the Norfolk Southern Railway.

Exploring Maplewood's Past

Civil War History in Maplewood

Maplewood is on the path that Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his army took during their retreat in the final days of the Civil War. This period is known as the Appomattox campaign.

Many historical markers are placed along this route. One official sign near Maplewood on US 360 explains:

Near here Lee, moving south toward Danville, in the afternoon of April 5, 1865[,] found the road blocked by Sheridan. He then turned westward by way of Amelia Springs, hoping to reach the Southside (Norfolk and Western) Railroad.

The last major battle fought by Lee's army happened a few miles west of Maplewood. This was the Battle of Sayler's Creek on April 6. Just three days later, Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox.

Tornadoes in Amelia County

Amelia County is located in a part of Central Virginia that sometimes experiences tornadoes. There have been several tornado touchdowns in the area. One notable tornado occurred on April 30, 1924. It caused one death and injured seven people. This tornado traveled from Jetersville to Chula. It destroyed seven homes in Maplewood before moving east of the courthouse area.

Maplewood's Recycling and Waste Facility

In 1993, a large recycling and waste disposal facility opened in Maplewood. It is called the Maplewood Recycling and Waste Disposal Facility. This facility replaced an older county landfill. It covers a large area of about 794 acres, which is more than a square mile. Waste Management of Virginia, Inc. owns and operates this facility.

After a large coal ash spill in North Carolina in 2014, about 750 tons of coal ash were sent to the Maplewood facility. This waste was transported by train from the spill site.
