Maracena is a cool town (called a municipality) in the province of Granada, Spain. In 2005, about 18,819 people lived there. By 2018, the population grew to over 22,000!

It's right in the middle of the 'Vega de Granada' area. This means it's part of the bigger Granada city area, along with 51 other towns. Maracena is next to towns like Peligros, Pulianas, and Albolote. The Granada metro (a type of train) connects Maracena to central Granada and other nearby towns, making it easy to get around!

A Look at Maracena's Past

Maracena has a long history, going all the way back to Roman times! We know this because in the 1970s, a special stone tablet with Latin writing was found there. This tablet was from the 2nd century AD.

Important Leaders and Battles

During the time when Muslims ruled parts of Spain, a famous Arab leader named Hamdum ibn Sawar was born in Maracena. He even built a watchtower on a hill nearby! Later, a king from Aragon, Alfonso (known as 'El Batallador'), visited Maracena. A big battle called the Battle of Higuerela also happened here. This was before the Catholic Monarchs (King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella) took back Granada.

Changes Over Time

After the Christians took over, many people from northern Spain moved to Maracena. At the same time, the Moors (Muslims living in Spain) were asked to leave the area.

In the 1700s, Maracena faced tough times. There were several cholera outbreaks, which are serious illnesses. These outbreaks sadly caused many people to die.

Farming and New Crops

For a long time, Maracena was famous for growing grapes. It even had about twenty wineries! But in the 1800s, a disease called phylloxera attacked the grapevines. This forced farmers to find a new crop, and they started growing sugar beets instead. This change really affected the town's economy.

Maracena Today

Since the late 1900s, Maracena has become a busy and growing town. It's a popular place to live near Granada. People in Maracena enjoy an active life with lots of economic, cultural, and sports activities. Popular sports include cycling, football, fencing, wrestling, and running.
