Marcello Muhammad Simmons was born on August 8, 1971. He is a former American football player who played as a defensive back. He also became a special teams coordinator for the BC Lions. Marcello played for two seasons in the National Football League (NFL) with the Cincinnati Bengals. After that, he spent seven seasons in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played for teams like the Toronto Argonauts, Edmonton Eskimos, and BC Lions.

Marcello Simmons is a three-time Grey Cup champion. He won the Grey Cup twice as a player in 1996 and 1997. He won it a third time as a coach in 2004. He played college football for the SMU Mustangs.

College Football Career

Marcello Simmons played college football for the SMU Mustangs. He was part of the team from 1989 to 1993. In 1992, he received an award for being SMU's Most Improved Athlete. Marcello later earned a degree in Advertising from SMU.

Professional Playing Career

NFL Draft and Early Years

In the 1993 NFL draft, the Cincinnati Bengals picked Marcello Simmons. He was the 90th player chosen overall in the fourth round. During the 1993 NFL season, Simmons played in all 16 regular season games for the Bengals. He started in two of those games. In 1995, he signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, he was released from the team before the regular season began.

Playing in the CFL

After leaving the Jaguars, Marcello Simmons joined the Toronto Argonauts in the Canadian Football League. He started playing for them midway through the 1995 CFL season. He spent his first two weeks on the practice team. Then, he started in the last five games of that season.

In 1996, Simmons was a starting defensive player for the Argonauts. That year, the team won its first of two Grey Cup championships in a row. In 1999, Simmons was traded to the Edmonton Eskimos. He played for them for the rest of that season.

In 2000, he signed with the BC Lions. However, he was traded back to the Toronto Argonauts during the same season. Marcello Simmons finished his playing career with the Argonauts. He spent six of his seven CFL seasons with them.

Coaching Career

Starting as a Coach

In 2003, Marcello Simmons became the special teams coach for the Toronto Argonauts. The team went on to win a Grey Cup championship the following year. Simmons continued to be the special teams coach for the Argonauts until the end of the 2008 season.

University Coaching Roles

On June 4, 2010, it was announced that Simmons joined the coaching staff for the Acadia Axemen football team. He worked as the defensive backs coach for the University of Guelph Gryphons football team in 2011. In 2013, he became the defensive coordinator for the Saint Mary's Huskies.

Return to Professional Coaching

On January 20, 2012, Simmons returned to coaching professional football. He was named the defensive backs coach for the Edmonton Eskimos. In 2014, he joined the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. There, he worked as a defensive and special teams assistant. In 2016, he became the BC Lions special teams coordinator.
