Maria Hupfield (born in 1975) is a talented Canadian artist. She is from the Anishinaabe people, specifically the Ojibwe nation, and is a member of the Wasauksing First Nation in Ontario, Canada. Maria creates art using many different methods, like video and performance. Her performances often share stories from Anishinaabeg oral history and connect to feminist art ideas.

Growing Up and Learning

Maria Hupfield grew up in Parry Sound, Ontario. She studied art history at the University of Toronto. She also learned about Indigenous cultures. Later, she earned a special art degree from York University.

Her Art and Work

Maria Hupfield is known for her amazing art shows. In 2017, she had a solo exhibition called The One Who Keeps On Giving at The Power Plant in Toronto. People said it was a big success. She also had shows like East Wind Brings a New Day in Regina in 2015. Another show, Strange Customs Prevail, was seen in Manitoba in 2011 and Montreal in 2017.

Maria also helps young people. She started 7th Generation Image Makers. This program teaches art and mural painting to Native youth in downtown Toronto. She also co-owns Native Art Department International with her partner, Jason Lujan.

From 2007 to 2011, Maria taught art at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. She has won important awards for her art. In 2014, she received the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painting and Sculpture Grant. In 2018, she won the Hnatyshyn Foundation prize. This award celebrates Canadian artists who have achieved a lot in their careers.

As of July 2025, Maria Hupfield is a professor at the University of Toronto Mississauga. She teaches about Indigenous Digital Arts and Performance. She also holds a special research position there.
