Marie François Sadi Carnot (born August 11, 1837 – died June 25, 1894) was an important French leader. He was the fourth President of the Third French Republic. He served as president from 1887 until he died after an attack in 1894.

Becoming President

Sadi Carnot was known for being very honest. This made him a popular choice to become president. The previous president, Jules Grévy, had resigned. Carnot was elected by a large number of votes. He became president during a difficult time for France. Many people were worried about the future of the Republic.

Protecting the Republic

Carnot's popularity helped to make a powerful general named General Boulanger leave the country. Boulanger wanted to bring back the idea of a king ruling France. People were afraid he might try to take over the government. Carnot helped to keep the Republic safe.

His Final Days

Carnot was very popular when he visited Lyon on June 24, 1894. After a public dinner, he was attacked by a person who disagreed with the government. Carnot died shortly after midnight on June 25. People across France were very sad and shocked by his death. He was given a special funeral ceremony at the Panthéon in Paris.
