Marija Pejčinović Burić (born on April 9, 1963) is a well-known Croatian politician. She belongs to the Croatian Democratic Union party. From 2017 to 2019, she served as Croatia's Minister of Foreign and European Affairs. She was also the First Deputy Prime Minister of Croatia. She was the third woman to hold the important role of foreign minister in Croatia. Before these roles, she was a Member of Parliament from 2008 to 2011.
In 2019, Marija Pejčinović Burić was chosen as the 14th Secretary General of the Council of Europe. This is a very important international job. She started her term on September 18, 2019, and finished on September 18, 2024.

Early Life and Education
Marija Pejčinović Burić studied Economics at the University of Zagreb. She finished her degree in 1985. Later, in 1994, she earned a Master of Science degree. This was in European Studies from the College of Europe.
After college, she worked in business for a few years. She was a trade expert for a company called Končar Inženjering. She also worked in corporate communications for a pharmaceutical company named Pliva. This meant she helped manage how the company talked to the public.
Starting a Political Career
Working for the Government
In 2000, Marija Pejčinović Burić began working for the Croatian government. She became an Assistant Minister in the Ministry of European Integration. This ministry helped Croatia get closer to joining the European Union (EU).
She was part of the team that worked on an important agreement between the EU and Croatia. This agreement was called the Stabilisation and Association Agreement. From 2003, she also taught about European integration.
In 2004, she became a State Secretary. This is a high-level government position. She worked on preparing Croatia to join the EU. She helped manage programs and cooperation with the EU. She also worked on rules for the free movement of money.
From 2006 to 2008, she was a key negotiator for Croatia's EU membership. She helped discuss many important topics. These included foreign relations and security policies.
Serving in Parliament
In 2008, Marija Pejčinović Burić was elected to the Parliament of Croatia. She represented her political party, the Croatian Democratic Union. She served in parliament until 2011.
While in parliament, she worked on committees. These included the Committee on European Integration and the Committee on Foreign Affairs. She also helped lead a group that worked on friendly relations between Croatia and the USA.
After her time in parliament, she worked as a consultant. She advised countries on how to get closer to the EU. She even helped the government of Serbia with European integration.
In 2016, she returned to government service. She became a State Secretary again. This time, it was in the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.

Foreign Affairs Minister
In June 2017, Marija Pejčinović Burić was appointed as Croatia's new Foreign Affairs Minister. As minister, she was in charge of Croatia's relationships with other countries.
She also led the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe for six months in 2018. This is a very important group within the Council of Europe.
Leading the Council of Europe

On June 26, 2019, Marija Pejčinović Burić was elected as the 14th Secretary General of the Council of Europe. The Council of Europe is an international organization that works to protect human rights, democracy, and the rule of law in Europe.
She won the election against Belgium's foreign minister. She officially started her new role on September 18, 2019.
As Secretary General, she has met with many world leaders. For example, in 2021, she met with the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu. They discussed human rights and efforts to fight corruption in Moldova. Marija Pejčinović Burić showed her support for these efforts.
