Marija Pejčinović Burić (born on April 9, 1963) is a politician from Croatia. She belongs to the Croatian Democratic Union party. From 2017 to 2019, she was the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs and the First Deputy Prime Minister of Croatia. She was the third woman to serve as Croatia's foreign minister.

On June 26, 2019, she was chosen as the 14th Secretary General of the Council of Europe. She won against Belgium's foreign minister, Didier Reynders. Marija Pejčinović Burić started her term on September 18, 2019. Her time in this role ended on September 18, 2024. She was then followed by Alain Berset, a former Swiss President.

Learning and Early Jobs

Marija Pejčinović Burić finished her studies in Economics at the University of Zagreb in 1985.

After graduating, she worked as an expert in trade for a company called Končar Inženjering in Zagreb from 1988 to 1991. In 1991, she became the Secretary General of Europe House Zagreb. Later, she was the Deputy Secretary General of the European Movement Croatia.

In 1994, she earned a Master of Science degree in European Studies from the College of Europe. After that, she returned to work for Končar Inženjering. In 1997, she became the director of communications for a medicine company called Pliva in Zagreb.

Her Political Journey

Working for the Government

In 2000, Marija Pejčinović Burić became an Assistant Minister in Croatia's Ministry of European Integration. In 2001, she joined the team that worked on an agreement between the EU and Croatia. This agreement was called the Stabilisation and Association Agreement. From 2003, she taught about European integration at the Croatian Diplomatic Academy.

In 2004, she became a State Secretary at the Ministry of European Integration. The next year, she was a State Secretary for European Integration at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration. She helped manage programs for Croatia to join the EU. She also worked on Croatia's talks to join the EU from 2006 to 2008.

Member of Parliament (2008–2011)

In 2008, Marija Pejčinović Burić was elected to the Parliament of Croatia. She represented the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party. She was a Member of Parliament until the elections in 2011.

While in parliament, she worked on committees dealing with European integration and foreign affairs. She was also part of Croatia's group that worked with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. She led the friendship group between Croatia and the USA.

From 2012 to 2013, she taught about the Lisbon Treaty at Croatia's State School for Public Administration. From 2013, she worked as a private advisor. She helped countries that wanted to join the EU or work closely with it. She also advised the Government of Serbia on European integration.

On November 17, 2016, Marija Pejčinović Burić returned to work as a State Secretary. This was in the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs. She worked under Minister Davor Ivo Stier in the government led by Prime Minister Andrej Plenković.

Foreign Affairs Minister (2017–2019)

In June 2017, Prime Minister Andrej Plenković chose Marija Pejčinović Burić to be Croatia's new Foreign Affairs Minister. She took over from Davor Ivo Stier.

In this role, she led the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe for six months in 2018. From 2017 to 2019, she also helped lead meetings for trade ministers of the European People's Party.

In 2019, Marija Pejčinović Burić announced she wanted to become the next Secretary General of the Council of Europe.

On June 26, 2019, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe voted for its 14th Secretary General. The candidates were Marija Pejčinović Burić and Didier Reynders from Belgium. Marija Pejčinović Burić won with 159 votes to 105. She officially started her new role on September 18, 2019.

She was present with the President of Moldova Maia Sandu on April 19, 2021. They were in Strasbourg, France, for the signing of the Council of Europe Action Plan for the Republic of Moldova 2021–2024. She talked with President Sandu about human rights, politics, and the COVID-19 pandemic in Moldova. Marija Pejčinović Burić showed her support for President Sandu's efforts to fight corruption.

Other Work

  • She has been a member of the Board of Directors for the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) since 2016.
