Marine is a small village in Madison County, Illinois, United States. It is located in the eastern part of Madison County. In 2020, about 912 people lived there.

A Look Back in Time

Marine was first settled in 1834. It was originally called Marinetown. Four sailors, George W. Welsh, James Semple, Jordan W. Jeffress, and Abram "Abraham" Breath, founded the village.

How Marine Got Its Name

The founders were sailors. They said the sound of the prairie grass blowing in the fields reminded them of the sea. This is why they chose the name "Marine." The village officially became a village in 1867. It was reincorporated in 1888.

Where is Marine Located?

Marine is in eastern Madison County. Its exact location is 38.787365 degrees north and -89.778135 degrees west.

Roads and Travel

Illinois Route 143 (also known as Division Street) goes right through the middle of the village. This road can take you southeast to Highland (about 6 miles away). It also goes west to Edwardsville (about 10 miles away). Edwardsville is the main city for Madison County.

Interstate 70 is a big highway that passes about 2 miles south and east of Marine. You can get to it from Illinois Route 143 at Exit 24. I-70 leads northeast to Greenville (about 21 miles away). It also goes southwest to downtown St. Louis (about 30 miles away).

Land and Water

The U.S. Census Bureau says that Marine covers about 0.71 square miles (1.83 square kilometers). All of this area is land. There is no water within the village limits. The village's water flows southwest into a small stream. This stream then joins Silver Creek, which flows south into the Kaskaskia River.
