Mario Basler, born on December 18, 1968, is a famous German football player and manager. He mostly played as a right midfielder. He is known for being great at "dead-ball" situations. This means he was excellent at scoring goals from free-kicks and even directly from corner kicks! These special corner kick goals are sometimes called "Olympic goals." Mario Basler was also known for his creative playing style on the field. Today, he is a player and advisor for TSG Eisenberg.

Playing for Football Clubs

Mario Basler started his football journey in his hometown of Neustadt an der Weinstraße. He began his professional career with 1. FC Kaiserslautern. After playing for Hertha BSC and Rot-Weiss Essen in Germany's second division, he joined Bundesliga club SV Werder Bremen in 1993.

Success with Werder Bremen

While playing for Werder Bremen, Basler helped his team win the DFB-Pokal (German Cup) in 1994. They also finished second in the Bundesliga league in 1995. During the 1994–95 season, Mario Basler was the top goal scorer in the Bundesliga, scoring 20 goals!

Joining Bayern Munich

In 1996, Basler moved to FC Bayern Munich, one of Germany's biggest clubs. With Bayern, he won the Bundesliga league title twice, in 1997 and 1999. He also scored the winning goal in the 1998 DFB-Pokal final, helping Bayern win another cup.

A famous moment was in the 1999 UEFA Champions League Final against Manchester United. Mario Basler scored the first goal for Bayern Munich with a fantastic free-kick early in the game. Even though Bayern led for most of the match, they sadly lost 2–1 in the end.

Returning to Kaiserslautern

Basler returned to 1. FC Kaiserslautern in 1999. He helped them reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in 2001. In 2003, his team made it to the final of the DFB-Pokal again, but they were beaten by his old club, Bayern Munich.

Playing for Germany

Mario Basler played for the German national team 30 times between 1994 and 1998. He scored two goals for his country during this time. He was part of the German squad for the 1994 FIFA World Cup. He was also in the team that won the European Championship in 1996, a huge achievement for Germany! Even though he didn't play in the Euro 1996 tournament, he was still a valuable member of the winning squad.

Coaching Football Teams
