Mario Basler (born on December 18, 1968) is a German football manager and former professional player. He mostly played as a right midfielder. Today, he is a player and advisor for TSG Eisenberg.
Mario Basler was known for his amazing skills with the ball. He was especially good at taking "dead-ball" kicks. These are kicks from a stopped ball, like free-kicks or corner kicks. He even scored two goals directly from corner kicks! These special goals are sometimes called Olympic goals. He was also known for being very creative on the field.

Mario Basler's Club Career
Mario Basler was born in Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Germany. He started his football journey with 1. FC Kaiserslautern. Later, he played for Hertha BSC and Rot-Weiss Essen in Germany's second division.
Playing for Werder Bremen
In 1993, Basler joined Bundesliga club SV Werder Bremen. With Bremen, he helped the team win the DFB-Pokal (German Cup) in 1994. They also finished second in the Bundesliga league in 1995. During the 1994–95 season, Mario Basler was the top goal-scorer in the Bundesliga, scoring 20 goals!
Time at Bayern Munich
Basler moved to FC Bayern Munich in 1996. There, he won the Bundesliga title twice, in 1997 and 1999. He also scored the winning goal for Bayern Munich in the 1998 DFB-Pokal final.
One of his most famous moments was in the 1999 UEFA Champions League Final. This was a huge game against Manchester United. Basler scored the first goal for Bayern Munich with a fantastic free-kick early in the game. Even though Bayern lost the match 2–1, his goal was a memorable highlight.
Return to Kaiserslautern
In 1999, Basler went back to his first club, 1. FC Kaiserslautern. He helped them reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in 2001. He also played in the final of the 2002–03 DFB-Pokal in 2003. In that final, Kaiserslautern played against his former team, Bayern Munich, and lost.
Mario Basler's International Career
Mario Basler played for the German national team 30 times between 1994 and 1998. He scored two goals for his country. He was part of the German squad for the 1994 FIFA World Cup. He was also selected for UEFA Euro 1996, which Germany won! Even though he didn't play in any games during that tournament, he was still a part of the winning team.
Mario Basler's Coaching Career
After his playing career, Mario Basler became a football coach. He started coaching in 2004 with SSV Jahn Regensburg. Over the years, he coached several other teams. These included SV Eintracht Trier 05, SV Wacker Burghausen, and Rot-Weiß Oberhausen. In 2015, he also worked as a sports director for 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig. Since 2019, he has been an advisor for TSG Eisenberg.
