Mark R. Charles is a Native American activist, speaker, and writer. He focuses on issues important to Native American communities. He is also a journalist, blogger, and a pastor. In the 2020 United States presidential election, he ran for President of the United States as an independent.

Early Life and Education
Mark Charles grew up in Gallup, New Mexico. His father was Navajo, and his mother was Dutch-American. He later attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he graduated.
Activism and Work
As an activist, Mark Charles is well-known for speaking out against the doctrine of discovery. This was a historical idea that allowed European nations to claim lands already inhabited by Indigenous peoples. He also opposed the Dakota Access Pipeline, a large oil pipeline project.
Charles used to be a pastor at the Christian Indian Center in Denver, Colorado. He works as a consultant for the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship. He is also a correspondent, which means he reports news, for Native News Online from Washington, D.C.. Since 2008, he has written a blog called Wirelesshogan: Reflections from the Hogan.
Running for President in 2020
On May 28, 2019, Mark Charles announced that he was running for President of the United States. He ran as an independent candidate in the 2020 United States presidential election. In August 2019, he spoke at the Frank LaMere Native American Presidential Forum. Other well-known candidates like Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Kamala Harris were also there.
In July 2020, Charles announced that Sedinam Moyowasifza-Curry would be his running mate. A running mate is the person who runs for Vice President alongside the presidential candidate. However, in August 2020, his campaign stated that she was no longer his running mate. Later that month, Charles announced that Adrian Wallace would be his new running mate. Wallace was the Vice President of the Lexington NAACP and Chairman of the Kentucky State Conference of the NAACP.
Charles was officially listed on the ballot in Colorado. He also had the option for people to write in his name in several other states. In the 2020 election, he received a total of 3,098 votes. This included 2,011 votes from states where he was on the ballot and 1,087 votes from write-ins.

Mark Charles is a Christian. He served as a pastor for a Christian Reformed Church for two years.
