Sports in Marrar: A Town That Loves Footy!

The most popular sport in Marrar is Australian rules football. This area is special because it's a "Canola Way" pocket. This means Australian rules football is very popular here. This is interesting because New South Wales usually prefers rugby league.

The Marrar Football Club: A History of Wins

The Marrar Football Club started in 1918. They won their first championship, called a premiership, in the Coolamon District Football Association that very same year!

The Marrar FC has won many premierships over the years:

  • They won three premierships in the South West Football League (New South Wales) in 1918, 1919, and 1923.
  • They played in the South West Football League (New South Wales) from 1919 to 1926, then again in 1932, and from 1949 to 1951.
  • From 1952 to 1956, they played in the Reserve competition of the Albury & District Football League.
  • The club then joined the Central Riverina Football League from 1957 to 1981. They were champions in 1965, 1966, and 1979. They also finished as runners-up several times.
  • Since 1982, Marrar FC has played in the Farrer Football League. They won senior football premierships in 1995, 1996, 2017, and 2018.

Local Sports Connections

The closest rugby league team is in the nearby town of Junee. Since Junee hasn't had its own Australian Rules team since 1987, many Aussie Rules players from Junee travel to Marrar to play for their team.
