Martelange is a small town in Belgium. It's located in the province of Luxembourg. This area is part of Wallonia, which is the French-speaking region of Belgium.
On January 1, 2007, about 1,584 people lived in Martelange. The town covers an area of nearly 30 square kilometers. This means there were about 53 people living in each square kilometer. Besides Martelange itself, the area also includes the villages of Grumelange and Radelange.
A special thing about Martelange is its border. For about 1.8 kilometers, the main road, called the N4, forms the border with the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. This road goes from Brussels to Arlon.
History of Martelange
Past Industries
Between 1830 and 1947, Martelange was a very important place for slate quarrying. This means people dug up slate, which is a type of rock used for roofs and other things. However, this industry has now completely stopped.
A Difficult Day
On August 21, 1967, a sad event happened in Martelange. A French tanker truck carrying a large amount of gas had brake problems. It crashed and exploded in the middle of the village. This accident caused a lot of damage and sadly, many people were hurt or lost their lives. Dozens of homes were also completely destroyed.
