History of Martin

Martin became an official town in 1891. The first person to settle here was Henry C. Black. He was an agent for the Air Line Railroad, which set up a station in 1877.

Henry Black built homes and shops near the railroad junction. This made other people want to move there too. The Red Hollow Road was an important path for farmers to send their products to big cities like Augusta and Savannah. The town was named after John Martin, who was the governor of Georgia in 1782.

Martin is in the southeastern part of Stephens County. A small piece of the town also reaches into Franklin County. It is next to the town of Avalon to the north.

Georgia State Route 17 goes through Martin. This road leads northwest about 11 miles (18 km) to Toccoa. It also goes southeast about 6 miles (10 km) to Lavonia.

The town of Martin covers a total area of about 2.5 square miles (6.6 square kilometers). Only a very small part, about 0.02 square miles (0.06 square kilometers), is water.
