About Marvell Wynne
Marvell Wynne was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His father, also named Marvell Wynne, was a professional Major League Baseball player.
Marvell's Soccer Journey
High School and College Years
Marvell decided to play soccer from a young age, even though his father played baseball. He went to Poway High School in Poway, California. There, he was great at both soccer and track. In his last year of high school, he ran the 100-meter dash very quickly.
After high school, Marvell played college soccer for two years at UCLA. He was so good that in 2005, he was named a first-team All-American. This means he was one of the best college soccer players in the country.
Professional Career
Starting with New York Red Bulls
In 2006, Marvell Wynne was the very first player chosen in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft. The MetroStars, who later became the New York Red Bulls, picked him. He was known for being one of the fastest players in the league. At first, his coach thought he needed more practice. But when a new coach, Bruce Arena, took over, Marvell started playing regularly as a defender.
Moving to Toronto FC
In April 2007, Marvell was traded to Toronto FC. He continued to play well and became a favorite among the fans. He scored his first goal in Major League Soccer (MLS) on September 27, 2008, in a game against Houston Dynamo.
Winning with Colorado Rapids
On March 25, 2010, Marvell was traded again, this time to the Colorado Rapids. He had a very successful season with them. He changed his playing position from a right-back to a center-back. That year, the team won the MLS Cup 2010, which is a huge championship in American soccer. The final game was played in Toronto, his former team's home city!
Time with San Jose Earthquakes
After playing five seasons with the Colorado Rapids, Marvell joined the San Jose Earthquakes in December 2014. Sadly, in 2017, doctors found a heart problem during his preseason check-up. He had surgery for an enlarged aortic root. Even after surgery, he couldn't get medical permission to play soccer again. So, on April 20, 2018, Marvell officially announced his retirement from playing.
Playing for His Country
Marvell Wynne played for different youth teams for the United States. He was part of the Under-20 team that played in the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship. He played his first game for the main U.S. national team on June 28, 2007, against Argentina.
Marvell was also a key player for the U.S. Under-23 team that qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He played in the Olympics as a starter for the U.S. Men's team.
Life After Soccer
After retiring from professional soccer, Marvell Wynne moved to Quincy, Illinois. He became an assistant coach for the men's soccer team at John Wood Community College until 2021. He also spent time studying yoga, personal training, and nutrition.
