Marvin Harvey's Early Life

Marvin Harvey was born in Kansas City, Missouri. He went to Paseo High School. After high school, he decided to try out for the basketball team at Penn Valley Community College. He played there for two years.

Later, Harvey received a scholarship to play basketball at Ottawa University. He graduated from Ottawa University in 1980. In 1982, Harvey tried out for the NBA in Los Angeles, California. He made it to the final tryout group. Then, Marty Blake, who was a chief scout for the NBA, chose him to attend two more training camps for different NBA teams.

Coaching in Kansas and Missouri

Marvin Harvey became the head coach for both the boys' and girls' basketball teams. This was at Santa Fe Trail Jr. High School in Olathe, Kansas. During his time there, his boys' team had three seasons with only one loss each.

In 1983, he became the Shooting Coach for the University of Kansas Women's Basketball team. After that, he worked as a Shooting Coach for many major colleges and universities in Missouri and Kansas. He started the first program in Kansas for individual and small group player development. This program was called the Basketball Workshop.

As his program became well-known, Harvey began training his first NBA player. This player was Clay Johnson. Clay Johnson later won an NBA Championship with the Los Angeles Lakers. During the same summer, Harvey traveled across the United States. He was known as the "Shot Doctor" during these tours. He worked with top NCAA Women's Basketball Coaches for the Lynette Woodard free basketball camps. These tours offered free clinics. They also talked about important topics like character and being a student-athlete. Harvey also created a video called "Shooting the Basketball." It was sold across the country with a free poster to help players learn.

Expanding His Reach: Florida, Alabama, and Texas

From 1991 to 1993, Marvin Harvey traveled all over Florida. He taught girls how to shoot a basketball correctly. After working there for two years, he became the Director of Basketball Operations at the EDGE Training Facility, which was also home to HSTA.
