History of Maryville
Maryville became an official village on July 21, 1902. For a long time, Coal mining was the main industry in the area. This means many people worked in the coal mines, which was very important for the village's economy back then.
Where is Maryville?
Maryville is in the southern part of Madison County. It's about 17 miles (27 km) northeast of downtown St. Louis, Missouri.
The village shares its borders with other towns:
- To the north is Glen Carbon.
- To the east is Troy.
- To the south is Collinsville.
Important roads run through Maryville. Illinois Route 159 (also called Center Street) goes north to Edwardsville, which is the county seat. It goes south to the center of Collinsville. Illinois Route 162 crosses the northern part of the village, heading east to Troy and west to Pontoon Beach. Big highways like I-55 and I-70 also pass through the southern end of Maryville.
Maryville covers an area of about 5.76 square miles (14.93 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.

- Bob Boken was a baseball player. He played as an infielder for teams like the Washington Senators and the Chicago White Sox.
- Ken Oberkfell played professional baseball from 1977 to 1992. He played for six different teams, including the Cardinals and Braves. He mostly played third base and second base. After he stopped playing, he became a baseball coach.
