About Marz Lovejoy
Early Life and Music Beginnings
Marz Lovejoy was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She grew up in Los Angeles and San Diego. She has lived in New York for many years. Music was a big part of her life early on. Her father was a deejay, and her mother was a writer.
Marz graduated from the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles in 2010. She started writing poems in high school. These poems later turned into full hip-hop songs. Marz first became known by sharing videos of herself freestyling. She posted these videos on social media like YouTube. This helped her connect with Polyester, who produced her first music EP.
Music Career Highlights
Marz gained a lot of attention in April 2010. She was featured on Pac Div's popular song, “Shine.” After this success, Pac Div invited Marz to join their national tour. She opened for the group on 15 different dates.
On November 23, 2010, Marz released her first EP. It was called “This Little Light Of Mine.” This EP was very successful. It received praise from music websites like OkayPlayer.
Since her first EP, Marz has performed all over the country. In October 2010, she performed with Wu-Tang Clan members GZA and Raekwon. This was in New York City during a CMJ music event. Famous West Coast deejay DJ Quik also invited Marz to perform. She played at his Quik's Grooves concert series in Hollywood.
In 2011, she performed at SXSW. There, she opened for the famous singer Erykah Badu. A writer for the New York Times said Marz was "among the best" he heard at the festival. She also performed at the 2011 A3C Hip-Hop Festival in Atlanta. She played at the 2011 CMJ Festival, opening for the hip-hop group M.O.P. Marz performed at SXSW again in March 2012. She opened for GZA, who performed with Grupo Fantasma.
Marz has released several singles since her first EP. "Live Life" featured Smoke DZA. "I Can't Call It" featured Like of Pac Div and Jason Madison. Other singles include "Dolo," "Discouraged," and "One Night Only."
Acting and Fashion Work
In April 2011, Marz got her first movie role. It was in Sheldon Candis’ film “L.U.V.” The movie starred actors like Common and Danny Glover.
In April 2014, Marz got her second movie role. ..... The movie featured actors like Jonathan Daniel Brown and Ron Perlman.
In January 2015, Marz appeared in Princess Nokia's music video for "Young Girls." This video focused on a positive space for women of color.
Marz has also been active in the fashion world. In September 2015, she opened for Hood By Air at New York Fashion Week. She was also featured on the front page of Vogue.com. Since then, she has been a part of the fashion scene in New York, Copenhagen, and Paris.
Marz was the first pregnant model to pose for Rihanna's lingerie line, Savage X. She was also on the cover of Denmark's Costume Magazine.
Writing and Community Work
In 2019, Marz published her first children’s book. It is called B-A-B-Y. Steven Horton Jr. created the illustrations for the book.
In 2020, Marz released an EP called elePhant Soundz on SoundCloud. During the pandemic, she was inspired by her second pregnancy. Marz raised $45,000 to help Black Mothers and birth workers. She did this by creating a campaign around a live stream of her home birth.
Months later, she became the face of Nike’s first maternity clothing line. She also organized a bike ride in New York City with Nike. This event celebrated and raised money for Black women.
Marz also helped create an all-Black magazine. It is called The Black Utopia. She worked with her Black colleagues at Office Magazine on this project. Volume 1 of The Black Utopia was released in January 2021.
Marz is a full-time mother. She currently works as The Curator-at-Large for artist Alvaro Barrington's studio. She continues to focus on community in her work. This includes her yearly bike ride, "...And Still We Ride...".
