The Masafuera rayadito (Aphrastura masafuerae) is a very rare bird that lives only on Alejandro Selkirk Island. This island is also known as Isla Más Afuera, which means "Outermost Island." It is part of the Juan Fernández Islands in Chile. This special bird belongs to the ovenbird family, which is a group of birds known for building interesting nests. The Masafuera rayadito is one of only three species in its genus, called Aphrastura.
This little bird's home is in the wet, cloudy forests on the mountainsides. These forests are usually found between 800 and 1,300 meters (about 2,600 to 4,200 feet) above sea level. They are full of tree ferns and other ferns. During the cooler "austral winter" (which is summer in the Northern Hemisphere), these birds might fly down to lower areas.
What They Do and Where They Live
Masafuera rayaditos often travel in pairs. They look for food like arthropods (small creatures such as insects and spiders). They usually find their food in the lower parts of trees and bushes, or sometimes on the ground among the fallen leaves.
When it's time to build a nest, these birds go to high places, usually above 1,200 meters (about 3,900 feet). They make their nests in small, natural cracks and holes in rocks.
Why They Are Endangered
The Masafuera rayadito is a critically endangered species. This means it is very close to disappearing forever. In the 1980s, there were about 500 to 1,000 of these birds. But by 1992, that number had dropped to only 200. By 2002, there were just about 140 left.
The main reason for this big drop in numbers is introduced species. These are animals that people brought to the island, which are not naturally from there. For example, goats cause a lot of harm by walking all over the plants and eating them. This destroys the Masafuera rayadito's home. Other animals like rats and feral cats (wild cats) also likely hunt these birds and their eggs, making it even harder for them to survive.
