Masayoshi Ito (伊東 正義, Itō Masayoshi, 15 December 1913 – 21 May 1994) was an important Japanese politician. He briefly served as the acting prime minister in 1980. This happened after the sudden death of the previous prime minister, Masayoshi Ōhira. After this, he became Japan's foreign minister from 1980 to 1981.

Early Life and Education

Masayoshi Ito was born on December 15, 1913. His hometown was Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima, in Japan. His family had a connection to the old Aizu clan. He later attended Tokyo Imperial University.

Political Career Highlights

Ito became the acting prime minister for about a month in 1980. This was a very short but important time. During this period, he received advice on Japan's national security.

Strengthening Japan's Security

A special group suggested that Japan should work closely with the United States. They also said Japan should be able to defend itself better. This advice came because of conflicts happening in Asia. These included the Sino-Vietnamese War and the Soviet invasion in Afghanistan.

Role as Foreign Minister

After his time as acting prime minister, Ito became the Foreign Minister. He held this position from July 1980 to May 1981. He worked in the government of Prime Minister Zenko Suzuki.

However, he later resigned from this role. This was due to disagreements with the United States. The US government felt that Japan was moving away from their military alliance.

A Reputation for Honesty

Masayoshi Ito was known as a "clean" and honest politician. He was never involved in any major scandals. Because of his good reputation, he was considered to replace Prime Minister Noboru Takeshita. Takeshita resigned due to a big scandal called the Recruit scandal.

Ito thought about becoming prime minister. However, he had doubts about whether his party, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), was serious about making big changes. He had a plan for wide-ranging reforms. But top leaders in the party did not agree with his ideas. So, he decided not to take the position.

Personal Interests and Later Life

Masayoshi Ito enjoyed watching movies. He was a big fan of the famous Japanese actress Mitsuko Mori.

He faced health challenges later in his life. He was battling diabetes. Masayoshi Ito passed away on May 21, 1994.
