The Angel's Message to Joseph
In the verses right before this, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream. The angel told Joseph that King Herod had died. This was good news because it meant Jesus was now safe from Herod.
Returning to Israel
In Matthew 2:20, the angel gives Joseph more instructions. The angel says, "Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life." This means Joseph should get up, gather Jesus and Mary, and travel back to their homeland, Israel. The angel confirms that those who wanted to hurt Jesus are no longer alive.
