Matthew Chandler Fox (born July 14, 1966) is an American actor. He is famous for playing Charlie Salinger in the TV show Party of Five (1994–2000). He also played Jack Shephard in the popular drama series Lost (2004–2010). His role in Lost earned him nominations for important awards like the Golden Globe Award and Primetime Emmy Award.
Matthew Fox has also acted in many movies. Some of his well-known films include We Are Marshall (2006), Vantage Point (2008), and Bone Tomahawk (2015).

Early Life and Education
Matthew Fox was born in Abington, Pennsylvania. His parents are Loretta B. and Francis G. Fox. He has two older brothers. When he was one year old, his family moved to Crowheart, Wyoming. They lived on the Wind River Indian Reservation.
His mother worked as a teacher. His father raised longhorn cattle and horses. He also grew barley. Matthew Fox went to Wind River High School in Wyoming. He later transferred to Deerfield Academy and graduated in 1985.
He then attended Columbia University. In 1989, he earned a degree in economics. While at Columbia, he played as a wide receiver on the school's football team.
Acting Career
Matthew Fox started his acting career at age 25. His first TV appearance was in an episode of Wings in 1992. That same year, he also starred in a short TV series called Freshman Dorm. He took on supporting roles before making his movie debut in My Boyfriend's Back (1993).
In 1994, Fox got a main role in Party of Five. He played Charlie Salinger, the oldest of five siblings who lose their parents. The show was a popular teen drama and ran until 2000. In 1996, People Magazine named him one of the "50 Most Beautiful People in the World." After Party of Five, Fox starred in another TV series, Haunted, in 2002.
From 2004 to 2010, Fox played Dr. Jack Shephard in the hit show Lost. He first tried out for a different role, but the show's co-creator thought he would be perfect for Jack. For his work on Lost, he won a Satellite Award in 2005. He also shared a Screen Actors Guild Award in 2006 with the rest of the cast.
In 2006, Matthew Fox hosted Saturday Night Live. He also acted in the sports drama We Are Marshall with Matthew McConaughey. In 2008, he played Racer X in the movie Speed Racer.
After Lost ended, Fox said he was "done with television." In 2011, he performed in a play called In a Forest, Dark and Deep in London.
In 2012, he co-starred in Alex Cross. He played the villain, Michael "The Butcher" Sullivan. For this role, Fox worked hard to get a very muscular body. He also appeared briefly in the 2013 film World War Z, which starred Brad Pitt.
In 2015, Fox starred in the film Extinction. That same year, he also co-starred in the horror Western movie Bone Tomahawk. He had always wanted to act in a Western film.
From 2014 to 2021, Matthew Fox took a break from acting to spend time with his family. In 2021, he returned to acting. He was cast in the main role of a limited series called Last Light, which was released on Peacock.
Personal Life
In 1992, Matthew Fox married Margherita Ronchi. She is from Italy. They met when Fox was a student at Columbia University. The couple has two children.
Fox also enjoys photography. A special disc released with the first season of Lost showed pictures he took of the cast and crew while working on the show.
He also loves flying airplanes. He owns a Bonanza G36 plane. He finds flying exciting because it's all up to him to make it a good flight. He prepares very carefully before each flight.
