Matthew Chandler Fox (born July 14, 1966) is an American actor. He is well-known for playing Charlie Salinger in the TV show Party of Five (1994–2000). He also starred as Jack Shephard in the popular drama series Lost (2004–2010). His role in Lost earned him nominations for important awards like the Golden Globe Award and Primetime Emmy Award. Matthew Fox has also appeared in several movies, including We Are Marshall (2006) and Speed Racer (2008).

Early Life and Education
Matthew Fox was born in Abington, Pennsylvania. His parents are Loretta B. and Francis G. Fox. He has two brothers, Francis Jr. and Bayard. An interesting fact is that one of his ancestors was Union General George Meade. His family moved to Crowheart, Wyoming, when he was one year old. They lived on the Wind River Indian Reservation.
His mother worked as a teacher. His father raised longhorn cattle and horses. He also grew barley for a beer company. Matthew Fox went to Wind River High School in Wyoming. He later transferred to Deerfield Academy and graduated in 1985. He then attended Columbia University. In 1989, he earned a degree in economics. While at Columbia, he played as a wide receiver on the school's football team.
Acting Career
Matthew Fox started his acting career at age 25. His first TV appearance was in an episode of Wings in 1992. That same year, he also acted in a short TV series called Freshman Dorm. He took on supporting roles in other shows. His first movie role was in My Boyfriend's Back in 1993.
Becoming a TV Star
In 1994, Matthew Fox got a main role in Party of Five. He played Charlie Salinger, the oldest of five siblings. The show was about these siblings who lost their parents in a car accident. He starred alongside actors like Scott Wolf and Neve Campbell. The show was very popular and ran until 2000. In 1996, People Magazine recognized him as one of the "50 Most Beautiful People in the World." After Party of Five ended, he starred in another TV series called Haunted in 2002.
Success with Lost
From 2004 to 2010, Matthew Fox played Dr. Jack Shephard in the hit show Lost. Jack was a dedicated but troubled surgeon. Matthew Fox originally tried out for a different role, but the show's co-creator, J. J. Abrams, thought he was perfect for Jack. This role was initially planned for only the first episode.
His performance in Lost brought him many awards and nominations. He was nominated for a Golden Globe for "Best Actor – Television Series Drama." He won a Satellite Award in 2005. He also shared the 2006 Screen Actors Guild Award for "Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series" with his castmates.
Movies and Other Projects
In 2006, Matthew Fox hosted Saturday Night Live. He also appeared in the sports drama We Are Marshall with Matthew McConaughey. In 2008, he starred in the thriller Vantage Point. He also played Racer X in the movie Speed Racer.
Matthew Fox has often said he was "done with television" after Lost. In 2011, he acted in a play called In a Forest, Dark and Deep in London. He co-starred in the 2012 film Alex Cross. For this role, he changed his body a lot, becoming very muscular. He also had a small part in the 2013 movie World War Z.
In 2015, he starred in the film Extinction. That same year, he also appeared in the horror Western movie Bone Tomahawk. He had always wanted to act in a Western film.
From 2014 to 2021, Matthew Fox took a break from acting. He wanted to spend more time with his family. In 2021, he returned to acting in a limited series called Last Light, which was released on Peacock.
Personal Life
Matthew Fox married Margherita Ronchi in 1992. She is from Italy. They met when he was a student at Columbia University. They have two children together. Matthew Fox is also a talented photographer. A special disc released with the first season of Lost showed pictures he took of the cast and crew on set.
He loves flying airplanes and owns a Bonanza G36. He enjoys the challenge and responsibility of flying by himself.
