Matthias Herget (born 14 November 1955) is a German former professional footballer. He played as a sweeper, which is a defender who "sweeps" up any loose balls.
Herget played in the Bundesliga, Germany's top football league, for eight seasons. He played 237 games and scored 26 goals. Most of his time was spent with Bayer Uerdingen, where he was also a longtime captain.
He played 39 games for the West Germany national team. He represented his country in one World Cup and one European Championship.

Matthias Herget's Club Career
Early Professional Years
Matthias Herget was born in Annaberg-Buchholz, East Germany. He began his professional football journey with VfL Bochum. He played for them for two seasons in the Bundesliga.
In the summer of 1978, he moved to the second division. He joined Rot-Weiss Essen. During his time there, he mostly played as a midfielder. He scored 36 league goals in his last three seasons with the team.
Success with Bayer Uerdingen
Herget continued in the second division in the 1982–83 season. He scored five goals in 35 games for Bayer 05 Uerdingen. His team finished third and was promoted to the top league.
He was a key player for Bayer Uerdingen in the years that followed. He even scored goals in every season during his seven years with the club. In the 1985–86 season, the club achieved its best-ever finish, coming in third place.
Winning the German Cup
Herget played the full 90 minutes in the final of the 1985 German Cup. This was a big moment for him. His team defeated FC Bayern Munich 2–1. This win brought him the first and only trophy of his career.
Later Career and Retirement
After helping the Krefeld team stay in the top division in 1988–89, Herget moved clubs. At 33 years old, he signed with FC Schalke 04. He retired from playing football at the end of the season.
After his playing career, Matthias Herget became a manager. He coached several smaller clubs. These included SSV Buer, Eisbachtaler Sportfreunde 1919 e. V., and 1. FC Bocholt.
Matthias Herget's International Career
Debut for West Germany
Matthias Herget played his first game for West Germany on 26 October 1983. He came on as a substitute for the last ten minutes. West Germany won the game 5–1 against Turkey. This match was part of the UEFA Euro 1984 qualifiers.
World Cup and European Championship
He was part of the West Germany team that finished second at the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. However, he only played in one game during the tournament. This was a 2–0 loss against Denmark in the group stage. The game took place at Estadio Corregidora in Querétaro.
Under manager Franz Beckenbauer, Herget became a regular starter for the national team. He was also chosen to play in Euro 1988. This tournament was played in West Germany, their home country. Herget played alongside 1. FC Köln's Jürgen Kohler during the competition. The national team reached the semifinals. In total, Matthias Herget played 39 games for West Germany. He scored 4 goals for his country.
