Matthias Herget, born on November 14, 1955, is a German former professional footballer. He played as a sweeper, which is a defensive player who "sweeps up" any loose balls.
Herget played in 237 games in the top German league, the Bundesliga, scoring 26 goals. He spent most of his career with Bayer Uerdingen, where he was also the team's captain for a long time.
He also played 39 times for the West Germany national team. He represented his country in one World Cup and one European Championship.

Matthias Herget's Club Career
Matthias Herget began his professional football journey with VfL Bochum. He played two seasons in the Bundesliga, which is the highest football league in Germany.
Playing for Rot-Weiss Essen
In the summer of 1978, Herget moved to Rot-Weiss Essen. This team played in the 2. Bundesliga, which is the second division of German football. During his time there, he mostly played as a midfielder. A midfielder is a player who helps both in defense and attack. He scored 36 goals in his last three seasons with the club.
Success with Bayer Uerdingen
Herget continued in the second division in the 1982–83 season, joining Bayer 05 Uerdingen. He scored five goals in 35 games that season. His team finished third, which meant they were promoted to the top league, the Bundesliga.
He became a very important player for Bayer Uerdingen. He scored goals in every season during his seven years with the club. In the 1985–86 season, his team achieved their best-ever finish, coming in third place in the Bundesliga.
Winning the German Cup
A big highlight of his career was winning the German Cup in 1985. The German Cup, also known as the DFB-Pokal, is a major knockout football cup competition in Germany. Herget played the entire 90 minutes in the final match. His team beat FC Bayern Munich 2–1, winning the only trophy of his career.
Later Career and Retirement
After helping the team from Krefeld stay in the top division in 1988–89, Herget, at 33 years old, joined FC Schalke 04. He retired from playing football at the end of the 1989–90 season. After his playing career, he became a manager for several smaller football clubs.
Matthias Herget's International Career
Matthias Herget made his first appearance for the West Germany national team on October 26, 1983. He came on as a substitute in a match against Turkey. West Germany won that game 5–1.
Playing in the World Cup
He was part of the West Germany squad that finished second at the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. This means they reached the final but did not win the tournament. Herget played in one match during the World Cup, which was a group stage loss against Denmark.
