History of Matuyas Bajo
How Puerto Rico Became a U.S. Territory
Long ago, Puerto Rico was part of Spain. After a big conflict called the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Puerto Rico then became a territory of the United States. This means it is part of the U.S. but does not have all the same rights as a state.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States Department of War decided to count all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that Matuyas Bajo and a nearby community called Matuyas Alto had a total of 941 people living there together.
