History of Matuyas Alto
Matuyas Alto has an interesting history. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States.
In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census for all of Puerto Rico. This census found that the combined population of Matuyas Alto and the nearby barrio of Matuyas Bajo was 941 people.
