History of Maulds Meaburn
The name Maulds Meaburn has a long history, going all the way back to the 12th century. At that time, King Henry II ruled England. He decided to give parts of the land of Meaburn to two different people.
One part of the land went to a knight named Sir Hugh de Morville. The other part was given to King Henry II's sister, whose name was Maud de Veteripont.
How the Village Got Its Name
Later, Sir Hugh de Morville upset the King. Because of this, King Henry II took back the land he had given to Sir Hugh. This part of the land then became known as King's Meaburn.
However, the land that belonged to Maud de Veteripont remained hers. To this day, that area is still known as Maulds Meaburn, named after Maud herself!
Over many years, the village was owned by different families. After the Veteripont family, it was owned by the Frauncey family, and then by the Vernon family.
Flass House: A Historic Home
On the south side of the village, you can find a lovely old house called Flass House. It's a very pretty mansion that was built between 1851 and 1853. It was designed in a special style called Italianate, which means it looks like buildings you might see in Italy.
Geography and Nature
Maulds Meaburn is located right on both sides of the Lyvennet Beck, which is a small stream. The village is part of the larger Crosby Ravensworth Parish. A parish is like a local area or district.
