History of Maury City

Maury City gets its name from Abram Poindexter Maury. He was an important person who worked in the government for Tennessee. The town was first settled in 1876. This happened because people thought a railroad would be built there. Even though some tracks were laid, the train never really started running regularly.

The town officially began in 1906. It became an incorporated city in 1911. Then, in 1915, it received its special town charter. This charter gave it the right to govern itself.
