Early Life and Moving to America

Max Corput was born near Brussels in Belgium. We don't know his exact birth date, but it was likely between 1824 and 1826. In 1848, he was part of a group of Belgians who moved to the United States. They left Belgium because of political changes in their home country.

Corput and his family, including his younger brother Felix, traveled through New York and Charleston. They settled in Cave Spring, Georgia. This area had recently become available for new settlers.

Serving in the Civil War

When the American Civil War began in 1861, Max Corput joined the Confederate States Army. He became a Third Lieutenant in a unit called the Cherokee Artillery battery. This unit was made up of soldiers from Floyd and Cherokee counties in Georgia. Many of his relatives, including his brother Felix, also joined this unit.

Corput's unit was part of the Siege of Vicksburg. After this battle, they quickly returned to fighting. By 1864, Corput had been promoted to captain and was in charge of the battery. During the Battle of Resaca, his unit lost four cannons. Max Corput himself became a prisoner of war in April 1865. He was held at Camp Chase in Ohio until October of that year.

Life After the War

After the war ended, Max Corput moved to Atlanta. He started an architecture firm called Van den Corput and Fay. He had previously worked as an engineer, but he became well-known for his building designs.

Corput passed away on January 16, 1911, in Atlanta. He was buried in Oakland Cemetery. For many years, his grave did not have a marker, but one was placed in 2014. His wife, Marie, was 24 years younger than him and died in 1920. They had six children together.
