In the early 1890s, a very large black bear lived in the Maxfield area. This bear was known as "Old Ranger" and weighed around 400 pounds! Old Ranger was famous for raiding fruit orchards. Many people tried to catch or stop him, but he always managed to get away. Eventually, a local hunting group was able to shoot and kill him. An article in the New York Sun newspaper even wrote about Old Ranger, saying that "the whole of Penobscot County knew the bear, and he defied the entire population."
