Howland is a small town located in Penobscot County, Maine, in the United States. People first settled here in 1818. The town gets its name from John Howland, who was a passenger on the famous ship, the Mayflower. In 2020, about 1,094 people lived in Howland.

Howland is found on the west side of the Penobscot River. This is where the Penobscot River meets the Piscataquis River. The town covers a total area of about 35.62 square miles (92.26 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.

Howland Fire & EMS
The Howland Fire & EMS department is located in Howland, Maine. They provide emergency services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They help Howland and nearby towns like Enfield, Passadumkeag, Edinburg, Maxfield, and Mattamiscontis.
Most of the people in the department are volunteers. Some are part-time EMS (Emergency Medical Services) providers. The town of Howland provides money for the department each year. Other towns also pay for fire services. If the department needs new equipment that the town cannot afford, they raise money for it.
Since 2015, the department has made many improvements. They use new technology and have a website. This website helps them find new volunteers and share news. It also gives information about fire safety. Because of these changes, Howland Fire & EMS is now one of the best volunteer departments in northern Maine.
