Early Life and Music Beginnings
Maja Berović was born on July 8, 1987. She grew up in a village called Malešići, near Sarajevo, in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Her parents were Serbs. When she was three years old, her father passed away.
Maya lived in Malešići with her mother and older brother. This was during the Bosnian War. In 1995, after the war ended, her family moved to Bratunac. Her mother was originally from there. Maya has said that growing up during the war meant her family had to move to find a peaceful life. Even as a child, she mostly spent her days playing.
In Bratunac, Maya went to school. This is also where she started practicing music. From the age of 12, she sang in local places every weekend. She continued doing this until she was 18. Maya grew up listening to famous singers like Dragana Mirković, Lepa Brena, and Ceca. She says they inspired her music.
Music Career Journey
Maya Berović started singing professionally when she was a teenager. In August 2007, her first album, Život uživo, came out. It was released by Grand Production. This album included the popular song "Džin i limunada."
Her second album, Crno zlato, was released in December 2008. Then, in February 2011, she released her third album, which was self-titled, Maya. This album featured "Djevojačko prezime," which Maya calls her most popular song. It even won an award for 'Hit of the Year' in Sarajevo.
In October 2012, Maya released Djevojka sa juga with City Records. The next year, she performed in Belgrade for the first time. In April 2014, Maya sang a club-style song called "Alkohol" at the Pink Music Festival. This song was later used in the 2022 Netflix movie The Swimmers.
"Alkohol" was also part of her fifth album, Opasne vode, released in October 2014. This album had a new sound and a new look for Maya. She said it was a big step in her becoming more popular in Serbia. Both Djevojka sa juga and Opasne vode sold 50,000 copies each.
In March 2016, Maya released a very successful song called "Pauza." In this song, she sang in the Ekavian dialect, which is common in Serbia. This was different from the Ijekavian dialect, which is mostly spoken in Bosnia. Some people thought she was trying to appeal more to the Serbian market. Maya explained that the song was written by Serbian songwriters. However, she continued to sing in Ekavian even with Bosnian songwriters.
On her 29th birthday, Maya released the song "To me radi." It featured Bosnian rappers and producers Jala Brat and Buba Corelli. The music video for this song got over 70 million views. She kept working with them on her very successful album Viktorijina tajna. This album came out in July 2017 and sold 50,000 copies. By December 2022, all nine music videos from this album had over 340 million views on YouTube.
To promote the album, Maya went on a tour that included shows in the United States. In July 2018, she released her seventh studio album, 7. This album had nine songs, also written and produced by Jala Brat and Buba Corelli. By December 2022, these songs had over 350 million views and 18 million streams on Spotify. The album included a duet with Buba Corelli called "Pravo vreme." This song alone has over 130 million views. It is one of the most-watched music videos by a former Yugoslav artist.
In November 2018, as part of her Pravo Vreme tour, Maya held a concert at the Belgrade Arena. About 18,000 people attended. News reports said it was one of the fastest-selling concerts at that venue.
In July 2020, Maya held an online concert through a Serbian streaming service called YouBox. About 260,000 people watched it. On August 6, 2020, Maya released her eighth studio album, Intime. This album appeared on music charts in Austria and Switzerland. By the end of 2020, ten songs from Intime had over 100 million views combined. In October 2020, Maya also launched her own makeup collection called Maya Beauty Line. Her ninth album, Milion, was released in July 2023. Her tenth album, X, was released in July 2025.
