History of Mazeppa

Mazeppa was planned out in 1855. It was named after a poem by Lord Byron, which was inspired by a leader named Ivan Mazepa. The first count of people living there was in 1860, showing 534 residents. The town officially became a city in 1877.

In its early years, Mazeppa was a busy place for grinding grain into flour. At its busiest, the flour mill could produce 600 barrels of flour each day. It employed about 80 people. The mill used power from a large water wheel, called a turbine. This turbine was turned by water held back by a 26-foot tall wooden dam on the Zumbro River. This dam created a "Mill Pond." The mill faced many challenges and eventually burned down on February 2, 1891.

Mazeppa also had a busy train line. At its peak, seven trains passed through each day. People called this line the "Bug Line" because it had many curves east of town. The last train left Mazeppa in 1952. Today, Mazeppa is a quiet community. Many people who live there work in farming or commute to nearby towns.

Mazeppa Schools

The first Mazeppa Public School was built in 1858. It was made bigger many times over the years. A new high school building was finished in 1958. On December 26, 1975, a fire destroyed the old elementary school building. However, the newer high school and a gymnasium from the 1940s were saved. This was thanks to the brave actions of Mazeppa residents Keith Ramthun and Joseph Liffrig. They closed the fire doors before the fire department arrived.

In the fall of 1987, the Mazeppa Public School system joined with the Zumbrota Public School system. They created the Zumbrota-Mazeppa Public Schools. Their sports teams are called the "Cougars."

Historic Bridge

The city has one special place listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This is the Walnut Street Bridge, which was built in 1904. It is an important part of the city's history.
