Mazetown or Maze is a small village found in County Down, Northern Ireland. Its name might come from an old Irish word meaning "the basin" or "the plain." The village is located on the southern bank of the River Lagan. This river is important because it creates the boundary between County Down and County Antrim. Mazetown is part of the Lisburn City Council area. In 2001, a count showed that 363 people lived there.

What's Interesting Here?

Maze is known for the site of a former prison, once called HM Prison Maze. Before it was a prison, it was an air force base for the Royal Air Force, known as RAF Long Kesh. The prison was a significant place in Northern Ireland's history. It closed down in the year 2000.

Today, there are plans to develop the land where the prison used to be. Some ideas include building a new national stadium for Northern Ireland. There are also plans for a special place for horse riding events. People have different ideas about whether some of the old prison buildings should be kept or removed.
