Mazinaw Lake is a beautiful lake in Eastern Ontario, Canada. It's located north of a town called Kaladar. The lake is part of the upper Mississippi River system. Mazinaw Lake is quite large, with a perimeter of about 49 km (30 mi). It's also very deep, averaging 41 m (135 ft) and reaching a maximum depth of 145 m (476 ft). This makes it the seventh-deepest lake in Ontario, even deeper than some of the Great Lakes!
Exploring Mazinaw Lake
Mazinaw Lake is divided into two main parts by a narrow section. These parts are called South Mazinaw and North Mazinaw. The northern part is both larger and deeper than the southern part.
Bon Echo Provincial Park covers the middle section of the lake. This includes the narrow area between the two lake sections. The park also includes the famous Mazinaw Rock formation.
Mazinaw Rock: A Giant Canvas
The name Mazinaw comes from an Algonkian phrase. It means "painted-image lake." This name refers to the amazing pictographs found on Mazinaw Rock. These are ancient paintings on the rock face that overlook the lake.
Mazinaw Rock is located on the eastern side of North Mazinaw. It has over 260 native pictographs. These are often confused with petroglyphs, which are carvings, not paintings. The collection of pictographs on Mazinaw Rock is the largest visible one in Canada. Some of these paintings show Ojibwa figures. One important figure is Nanabush, who is a trickster and a hero in their stories.
The rock also has a special tribute to the famous American poet, Walt Whitman. This tribute was carved for Flora MacDonald Denison. She used to run the Bon Echo Inn in the 1910s, which was located where the provincial park is now.
Wildlife Around the Lake
If you visit Mazinaw Lake, you might be lucky enough to spot some wildlife! Mink are small, furry animals that can sometimes be seen along the northern shores of the lake.
