Meall Garbh is a cool mountain located in the Scottish Highlands. You can find it on the north side of a beautiful place called Glen Lyon. This mountain has a flat top with two high points that are almost the same height. The one on the north-west side is thought to be a tiny bit taller.

Exploring Meall Garbh: A Scottish Adventure

Meall Garbh is part of the amazing Grampian Mountains. It stands tall at 968 meters (about 3,176 feet) above sea level. This makes it a "Munro," which is a special name for Scottish mountains over 3,000 feet high. There are 282 Munros in Scotland, and climbing them all is a big challenge for many hikers!

What is a Munro?

A Munro is a mountain in Scotland that is at least 3,000 feet (914.4 meters) high. These mountains are named after Sir Hugh Munro, who first listed them in 1891. Climbing Munros is a very popular outdoor activity in Scotland. People who climb all of them are called "Munro Baggers."

Climbing Meall Garbh and Friends

Most people climb Meall Garbh as part of a longer hiking trip. This trip is a 14-kilometer (about 8.7 miles) loop that takes you over four different Munros! It follows the path around the Invervar burn, which is a small stream.

If you start this hike going clockwise, Meall Garbh is the second mountain you'll reach. You would first climb Càrn Gorm. After Meall Garbh, you would continue your adventure to Càrn Mairg and then Meall nan Aighean. It's a great way to see a lot of the Scottish Highlands in one go!

An Unusual Summit Cairn

When you reach the very top of Meall Garbh, you'll find something a bit surprising. Usually, a cairn (a pile of stones that marks a summit) is made of rocks. But the cairn on Meall Garbh is different! It's made from old iron fence posts instead of stones. This makes it quite unique among Scottish mountain tops.
