Meall Garbh is a mountain located in the southern part of the Scottish Highlands. Its name means "rough hill" in Gaelic. This mountain is part of the famous Ben Lawers range. It stands proudly with Meall Greigh at the north-eastern end of this mountain group. From its rugged southern side, Meall Garbh looks down over a small lake called Lochan nan Cat.
Exploring Meall Garbh
Meall Garbh is a popular mountain for hikers. It is known as a Munro, which is a Scottish mountain over 3,000 feet (914.4 meters) high. Its summit, or highest point, is 1,123 meters (3,684 feet) tall.
How to Climb Meall Garbh
Climbing Meall Garbh is an exciting adventure. The mountain's top is not easy to see from the main road (A827). Most people start their climb from this road.
A clear path follows a stream called the Lawers Burn. This path leads towards Lochan nan Cat. If you want to climb Meall Garbh directly, you can turn northeast from this path. You will do this shortly after passing some old, abandoned buildings called shielings.
Combining Your Climb
Many climbers prefer to tackle Meall Garbh along with its neighbor, Meall Greigh. They usually climb Meall Greigh first. Then, they use the path described above to come down from Meall Garbh.
You can also make your hike even longer! Meall Garbh can be part of a bigger trip across the Ben Lawers Range. This longer route includes climbing four other Munros. It usually finishes at the National Trust for Scotland visitor center. For super keen hikers, this route can be extended to seven Munros in total. This means also climbing Meall a' Choire Léith and Meall Corranaich.
