Melvin C. Triplett (born December 24, 1930 – died July 26, 2002) was an amazing American football player. He was a running back in the National Football League (NFL). Mel played for eight seasons, first with the New York Giants and then the Minnesota Vikings.
He started his football journey in high school at Girard High School in Girard, Ohio. After graduating in 1951, he was honored in the Girard Hall of Fame in 1997. Mel then played college football at the University of Toledo.

Mel Triplett's Pro Football Career
Mel Triplett was chosen by the New York Giants in the 1955 NFL Draft. He played for the Giants for six seasons. He was a key player on the team.
Winning the 1956 NFL Championship
In the 1956 championship game, Mel Triplett made a big impact. He scored the very first touchdown against the Chicago Bears. The Giants won that game with a score of 47–7. Mel was even named the Giants' best offensive player in that championship game!
Playing for the Minnesota Vikings
After his time with the Giants, Mel Triplett joined the Minnesota Vikings. He played for them in 1961 and 1962. Throughout his whole NFL career, playing for both teams, Mel gained a total of 2,857 yards. He also scored 14 touchdowns.
Mel Triplett's Legacy: The Number 33
Mel Triplett was a popular player, and he had a famous fan! A young basketball player in New York, named Lew Alcindor, admired Mel. Lew later became known as the legendary Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar wrote in his book Giant Steps that he chose his famous jersey number, 33, because of Mel Triplett. Mel wore number 33 for the New York Giants. It's cool how one athlete can inspire another!
