Melissa Price is an Australian politician. She was born on December 12, 1963. She is a member of the Liberal Party. Since 2013, she has been a member of the House of Representatives. She represents the area of Durack in Western Australia.
From 2018 to 2022, she held important government jobs. These included Minister for the Environment, Minister for Defence Industry, and Minister for Science and Technology. She was also an Assistant Minister for the Environment from 2017 to 2018.
Early Life and Education
Melissa Price was born in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. She was the youngest of four children. Her parents were Lyn and Ray Dellar. Her father worked in the mining industry. Her grandfather, David Dellar, and uncle, Stan Dellar, were also politicians. They represented the Australian Labor Party (ALP).
Melissa went to St Mary's Catholic Primary School. She also attended Prendiville Catholic Girls College in Kalgoorlie. She left school when she was 15 years old. Before becoming a politician, she worked in many different jobs. She worked in hospitality, insurance, and fast food management. She also worked in the grains and mining industries. For a while, she was even an aerobics instructor!
Later, Melissa went to university as an adult. She earned a law degree from London South Bank University. She also completed a law diploma at the University of Western Australia.
After her studies, Melissa worked as a lawyer from 1997 to 2002. Then, she worked for a grain company called CBH Group. She was their general counsel and business development manager until 2008. After that, she worked for an iron ore mining company. She was their vice-president of legal and business development until 2012. She also served on the boards of the Cancer Council of Western Australia and the BrightSpark Foundation.
Political Career
In 2013, Melissa Price first tried to become a state politician. She ran for the seat of Kalgoorlie but did not win. Later that year, she was chosen by the Liberal Party to run for a federal seat. This was for the area of Durack. The previous politician, Barry Haase, was retiring.
Melissa won the Durack seat for the Liberal Party in the September 2013 federal election. She continued to serve on important committees in parliament. From 2015 to 2016, she was part of the speaker's panel. From 2016 to 2017, she led the House of Representatives committee on Indigenous affairs. She was re-elected in the 2016 federal election.
Government Minister Roles
In December 2017, Melissa Price became the Assistant Minister for the Environment. She worked under Environment Minister Josh Frydenberg. This was during the time of the Turnbull government.
In 2018, there were some changes in the Liberal Party leadership. Melissa Price supported Scott Morrison to become the new Prime Minister. After Scott Morrison became Prime Minister, Melissa Price was promoted. She became the Minister for the Environment. This was a very important job in the government's top team, known as the Cabinet.
As Environment Minister, Melissa Price attended a big meeting about climate change in Poland. She worked on plans to protect Australia's environment. In March 2019, she said that bushfires in Western Australia and Victoria were linked to climate change. She also supported government plans like the Climate Solutions Fund. This fund aimed to help Australia deal with climate change.
In April 2019, she approved an environmental plan for the Adani Group's Carmichael coal mine in Queensland. She also approved the Yeelirrie uranium mine in Western Australia.
After the 2019 federal election, Melissa Price's role changed. She was no longer in the main Cabinet. However, she remained a minister. She became the Minister for Defence Industry. In this role, she focused on helping Australian businesses. She wanted to make sure small and medium-sized businesses could be part of the defence industry. She served in this role until May 2022.
Personal Life
Melissa Price has faced personal challenges. Her husband, Colyn, passed away in 2002. Their daughter, Rhiannon, also passed away in 2013.
As of 2015, Melissa Price was in a relationship with Brad Bell. He has two children from a previous marriage.
In 2019, Melissa Price lived in Geraldton, Western Australia. She is a big fan of the Fremantle Dockers football team.
