About Melissa Vargas
Melissa was born in Cienfuegos, Cuba. Her dad was a handball player, so sports were in her family! She started playing volleyball on the street when she was just six years old. By age eight, she joined her school's team. In 2021, Melissa became a citizen of Turkey.
Melissa's Volleyball Journey
Melissa began training with the Cienfuegos team when she was 12. She also played for the Cuban national youth volleyball teams, showing her talent from a young age.
Playing in Europe
In 2016, Melissa played for Agel Prostějov in the Czech Republic for one season. She got a shoulder injury and went back to Cuba for treatment. She wasn't happy with the medical care there. On June 29, 2018, Melissa made a big move to Turkey and joined Fenerbahçe Opet. This was a huge step in her career!
She also played in the Chinese League for parts of the 2021, 2022, and 2023 seasons. She would play the first half of the season there and then return to Fenerbahçe for the second half.
On April 10, 2021, Melissa officially became a citizen of the Republic of Turkey. The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, even gave her Turkish ID card to her personally. On July 9, 2024, she signed a new contract to stay with Fenerbahçe Opet for three more years.
