History of Mentone
Mentone was named after a town called Menton in France. It officially became a town in 1935.
Earthquake in 2003
In April 2003, Mentone was very close to where a 4.6 magnitude earthquake happened. This earthquake surprised everyone early in the morning. People felt it in several states. Luckily, no one was hurt, and the town only had minor damage. Mentone is in the Ridge and Valley part of the Appalachian Mountains. This area usually has many years between big earthquakes.
Geography of Mentone
Mentone is in the eastern part of DeKalb County. Its exact location is 34°34′20″N 85°34′49″W / 34.57222°N 85.58028°W. The town of Valley Head is to its west.
Location on Lookout Mountain
The center of Mentone is on top of Lookout Mountain. It is about 1,736 feet (529 meters) above sea level. The western edge of the town goes down the side of the mountain. The Little River, a small river, flows through the eastern part of Mentone. It is less than 100 feet below the mountain ridge.

The town covers about 4.3 square miles (11.13 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a tiny part, about 0.01 square miles (0.03 square kilometers), is water.
