Merlin is a small community in Josephine County, Oregon, United States. It is known as an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city does. It's also a "census-designated place" (CDP), which is an area the U.S. Census Bureau defines for gathering population data.

History of Merlin

The story of Merlin began with a railroad station in 1883. This station was first called "Jump Off Joe." It was named after a local stream.

In October 1886, the station's name changed to "Merlin." A civil engineer working for the railroad chose the name. He saw many merlins, which are a type of small falcon, flying in the area.

A post office called "McAllister" opened about a mile north of Merlin in 1885. Later, in 1891, this post office moved closer to the railroad station and was also renamed Merlin.

Geography and Location

Merlin is located about 9 miles (14 kilometers) northwest of a larger town called Grants Pass. It sits in a valley formed by Jumpoff Joe Creek. This creek joins the Rogue River about 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) to the west.
