Metroid is a popular series of video games created by Nintendo. The first game in the series came out in Japan in 1986. The main hero of these games is a space bounty hunter named Samus Aran. Most games in the series feature a special creature called a "Metroid," which is where the series gets its name. Metroids look a bit like jellyfish but they can fly. They have teeth instead of tentacles. These creatures attack by quickly flying at others and draining their life force.

Meet the Heroes and Villains

Samus Aran: The Space Hero

The main character in the Metroid series is Samus Aran. She always wears a very strong space suit. This suit gives her amazing powers. For example, she can jump super high and fall from great heights without getting hurt. Samus's right arm has a large gun built into it. She is almost always seen wearing this special suit. In many games, if players finish quickly or find enough items, they can see Samus without her suit. When this happens, she might be wearing a tight jumpsuit or other outfits.

Space Pirates: Samus's Enemies

The main bad guys in the Metroid games are the Space Pirates. They are tall creatures that look like lizards and walk on two legs. The leader of the Space Pirates is a powerful dragon named Ridley. Ridley is Samus's biggest enemy and often appears in the games.

How to Play Metroid Games

Exploring Alien Worlds

In most Metroid games, you play as Samus and explore faraway planets or large space stations. When you start a game, Samus usually has only a few powers. She also cannot go to many places yet. Your job is to explore and find new items and powers. These new abilities let you reach new areas and continue your adventure.

Goals and Challenges

In the very first Metroid game, Samus had to defeat Ridley and a giant monster named Kraid. She also had to destroy the Space Pirate's main computer, Mother Brain. Every Metroid game has different goals to achieve. However, almost all of them involve searching for hidden items and exploring new places.
