On July 1, 2018, Mexico held important general elections. During these elections, people voted for a new president. The president would serve for five years and ten months.

Voters also chose 128 members for the Senate. These senators would serve for six years. Additionally, 500 members were elected for the Chamber of Deputies. They would serve for three years.

This election day was one of the biggest in Mexico's history. Many states also held their own local elections at the same time. This included choosing nine new governors. The election campaign faced many challenges.

During the time leading up to the election, Andrés Manuel López Obrador was a very popular candidate. He ended up winning the election by a lot of votes. This is called a landslide victory.

López Obrador received about 53% of the votes. This was the first time since the 1988 election that a president won with more than half of all the votes.

Who Ran for President?

Many people ran for president in the 2018 election. The main candidates were Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Ricardo Anaya, José Antonio Meade, and Jaime Rodríguez Calderón. Margarita Zavala also started as a candidate but later dropped out of the race.
