Meyriez (pronounced like "MAY-ree-ez") is a small town in Switzerland. It's located in the canton of Fribourg, which is like a state. Meyriez is special because most people there speak German, even though the Fribourg canton mostly speaks French. It's part of the See or du Lac district.

A Look Back: History of Meyriez

Meyriez is an old place! We first hear about it in history books way back in 1162. Back then, it was called de Meriaco. A few years later, in 1178, its name changed slightly to Meriei.

Understanding Meyriez's Geography

Meyriez covers a small area of about 0.32 square kilometers. A big part of this land, about 88.2%, is built up with buildings and roads. This means it's a very developed area.

Only a small amount, about 2.9%, is used for farming. There are no large forests in Meyriez. A tiny bit, 5.9%, is unproductive land, meaning it's not used for anything.

This town used to be a fishing village. Today, it's a commuter town. This means many people who live in Meyriez travel to work in bigger nearby towns. It's now part of the larger area around Morat.

Meyriez's Coat of Arms

A coat of arms is like a special symbol for a town or family. Meyriez has its own unique coat of arms. It shows two silver fish on a red background. The fish are facing away from each other.

People and Population: Demographics

Meyriez has a population of 590 people (as of December 2020). About 7.9% of the people living here are from other countries. Over the last 10 years (2000–2010), the population grew by about 15.7%. Most of this growth was from people moving into the town.

Most people in Meyriez speak German as their main language. About 81.2% speak German. French is the second most common language, spoken by 13.5% of the people. A small number, 1.5%, speak Italian.

In 2008, a little more than half the population (51.4%) was female, and 48.6% was male. About 13.9% of the people living in Meyriez in 2000 were also born there. Many others were born elsewhere in Switzerland or outside the country.

Young people (0–19 years old) make up 27.4% of the population. Adults (20–64 years old) are the largest group at 58.9%. Seniors (over 64 years old) make up 13.7%.
