The Miawpukek First Nation is a group of Mi'kmaq people. They are a First Nation community in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

Most of the community lives on a special area of land called a reserve. This reserve is named Samiajij Miawpukek. It is located in Bay d'Espoir on the island of Newfoundland. In September 2019, about 834 people lived on the reserve. Many other members, about 2,223, live in other places.

The reserve was once known as Conne River until the 1980s. Samiajij Miawpukek became an official federal Indian reserve in 1987. This was the first time a reserve was recognized in Newfoundland and Labrador. In the early 1990s, Miawpukek was one of the less wealthy communities in Atlantic Canada. However, by focusing on education for its members, it has grown a lot. Today, it is one of the most successful First Nations in Atlantic Canada, similar to Membertou.

Community Life and Culture

The Miawpukek First Nation has a rich culture and strong community spirit. They work hard to keep their traditions alive. The community is led by a Chief and Council. They make decisions for the well-being of their people.

Celebrating Mi'kmaq Culture

One important cultural event is the annual powwow. This special gathering started in 1996. It is a time for dancing, singing, and celebrating Mi'kmaq heritage. People from all over come to share in the festivities. It helps to pass on traditions to younger generations.

Education and Growth

Education has been a key part of the community's success. By investing in schools and learning, more members have gained skills. This has helped the community to become stronger and more independent. It shows how learning can change a community for the better.

Location and Area

The Samiajij Miawpukek reserve covers an area of 28.39 square kilometers. It is located in a beautiful part of Newfoundland. The community is connected by Highway 365. This makes it easier for people to travel to and from the reserve.
