Michael's Baseball Journey

Starting with the Red Sox

Minor League Adventures

The Boston Red Sox picked Michael Chavis in the first round of the 2014 baseball draft. This was a big deal! Instead of going to college, Michael decided to sign with the Red Sox and start his professional career.

He began playing for the GCL Red Sox, a team for new players. He hit his first home run and helped his team win the Gulf Coast League championship. In 2015, he played for the Greenville Drive and hit 15 home runs. This was the most home runs by any player in the Red Sox's minor league system that year.

In 2017, Michael had a fantastic season. He hit 17 home runs for the Salem Red Sox before moving up to the Portland Sea Dogs. He was even named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) at the Carolina League All-Star Game. That year, he hit a total of 31 home runs, which was a lot for a minor league player. He became one of the Red Sox's top young players.

A Challenge and a Comeback

In April 2018, Michael faced a challenge. He was suspended for 80 games because of a rule violation. He said he never knew he took anything that was against the rules. After his suspension, he returned to play for different minor league teams. He played well, hitting nine home runs in 46 games. After this, the Red Sox added him to their main roster, which meant he was closer to playing in the big leagues.

In May 2019, Michael won the American League Rookie of the Month Award. This award goes to the best new player in the league for that month. He was doing great, hitting many home runs and helping his team score. In July, he hit his first "grand slam," which is a home run with all bases loaded. He finished the 2019 season with 18 home runs and 58 runs batted in for the Red Sox.

In the shorter 2020 season, Michael was part of the Red Sox's starting lineup. He played in 42 games, hitting five home runs. In 2021, he continued to play for the Red Sox and their minor league team in Worcester.
