Michael Greyeyes (born June 4, 1967) is a talented actor, dancer, choreographer, and director from the First Nations (Muskeg Lake Cree Nation) in Canada. He is known for playing strong characters in movies and TV shows.
In 1996, Michael played the famous leader Crazy Horse in a TV movie. Later, in 2018, he earned praise for his role as Sitting Bull in the movie Woman Walks Ahead. You might also recognize him from popular TV shows like Fear the Walking Dead, True Detective, and I Know This Much Is True. From 2021 to 2022, he had a main role in the comedy series Rutherford Falls. He also appeared in the western series 1923. In 2021, he won a Canadian Screen Award for Best Actor for his role in the zombie film Blood Quantum.

About Michael Greyeyes
Michael Greyeyes was born in Saskatchewan, Canada. He is a Plains Cree person from the Muskeg Lake First Nation. His parents were from the Muskeg Lake First Nation and the Sweetgrass First Nation, both in Saskatchewan.
Early Dance Career
Michael started his career as a dancer. He trained at The National Ballet School and graduated in 1984. He then joined The National Ballet of Canada in 1987.
In 1990, he moved to New York City to dance with modern dance choreographer Eliot Feld. Michael performed in many important ballets there. After years of dancing and acting, he went back to school. He earned a master's degree in Fine Arts from Kent State University in 2003.
Acting Journey
Michael began acting in 1993. His first role was as Juh in the TV movie Geronimo. This led to many other TV appearances. He guest-starred in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Walker, Texas Ranger, and Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. In 1998, he starred in Stolen Women, Captured Hearts. He also appeared in mini-series such as Klondike and Dreamkeeper.
His film roles include Dance Me Outside, Smoke Signals, and Sunshine State. In 2017, he played Chief Sitting Bull alongside Jessica Chastain in Woman Walks Ahead.
Dance and Directing Work
Michael also continued his research into modern forms of traditional dancing, like Powwow. His journey was shown in a CBC Television documentary called He Who Dreams: Michael on the Powwow Trail. He also choreographed and performed in art projects.
He continues to act and dance regularly. His recent works include the film The New World and Passchendaele. He also voiced the main character, Tommy Tawodi, in the 2006 video game Prey.
In 2010, Michael started Signal Theatre. This company explores different types of live performances. As the Artistic Director, he has created several major works. One notable work is A Soldier's Tale, which looks at how war affects soldiers and their families.
Recent Projects
Michael won a Canadian Screen Award in 2021 for his role in the zombie film Blood Quantum. He played Terry Thomas, the CEO of a fictional tribe's casino, in the Peacock TV series Rutherford Falls (2021-2022).
In 2021, he signed a deal with Blumhouse Productions, a company known for horror films. Michael appeared as John Rainbird in the 2022 movie Firestarter, based on a Stephen King novel. In 2023, he was a panelist on Canada Reads, supporting the novel Station Eleven. He has also directed episodes of the TV series Acting Good. His first short film, The Light Before the Sun, premiered in 2024.
Personal Life
Michael Greyeyes is an associate professor of theatre at York University. He is married to Nancy Latoszewski. They have two daughters, Lilia and Eva, who were born in 2002 and 2004.
